The Interview:Tony: So we are going to start off with your name and what business you own. DK: I am Damian Knight the owner of MGR Plumbing. Tony: I want you to start off about your business, when did it start, what year did it start? DK: Business started in 1974, I was 6 I was owned by a gentleman here local in Hollywood, and I just purchased it from him 3 years ago. I've been a plumber myself for 25 years, decided to move to Florida from up north was looking for a plumbing business to buy and fell right into this one. It worked out great. Tony: That's amazing. That's perfect Tony: So what was it that made you want to start this business? DK: Umm well I've been a plumbing contractor and its what I know. I've been on my own for 16 years. I have owned my own businesses in California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and now here in Florida. Tony: You're a seasoned entrepreneur, you definitely know the ropes, this isn't your first rodeo. DK: Decided to move down here to golf year round, and now I work too much to golf all the time. Tony: Oh goodness, that's a shame. DK: I decided to buy the business because it had a good reputation. It is very well known in Hollywood and I still get phone calls, we used to have a store front and sell parts, I get phone calls every other day for parts and unfortunately I'm not in the parts business any longer, but we are still well known in this area. Tony: That's good, that's good. Tony: My next question is, what was the toughest thing you went through when starting your business here? DK: It's always employees, ya know. Getting the right employee, the right fit whether I am the right for the employee, cause run my business a certain way, I expect certain things. Or is it the other way where I pick the right employee and get somebody that is going to be reliable, not do... Tony: shady stuff DK: Yes, side work. That kinda stuff. It's always expected in my business and I actually even allow some of it, ya know? Friends, family, that kinda stuff, but if it's a customer that comes through my business, it's my customer. Tony: Right, exactly. They have an obligation before they try to do everything on their own. Makes sense. Tony: If you had to start over from day 1, what would have done differently? DK: Hmm..... I probably would've worked harder at my first business in California and stayed in California. Tony: Was it also a plumbing business too? DK: It was a plumbing business......
